Shoes and Gym Strip
To promote a clean school and to reduce the amount of black marks in the gym and hallways, students are asked to bring a separate pair of runners for use within the school. Wearing winter boots throughout the school is not permitted. Indoor shoes will be used in the gym and throughout the school on days when the weather requires students to wear boots. Please ensure that these indoor shoes have non-scuff soles so that they don't mark the floors. Intermediate students are also required to bring a change of clothes (shorts and shirt) for use during their Physical Education classes. During wet weather, it is advisable that all students have an extra t-shirt and pants at school in case a change of clothing is necessary.
Loss Prevention
Information about student injury insurance policies is available through the school. Information packages are distributed to all students in September and are available on request to parents throughout the year.
Parents and guardians are asked to note that School District No. 23 does not assume responsibility for the loss of and/or damage to students' personal property that is brought to school. For this reason, students are strongly encouraged not to bring to school personal property of value such as CD/MP3/Ipod players, remote control cars, or precious jewelry. In the event that a student does bring property of value to school such as a band instrument, parents should arrange for the insurance through the family's homeowner insurance policy. Please consult your insurance agent for details.
Items that are lost and found again are placed in the Lost and Found boxes located in the foyer. Please check these boxes regularly to retrieve lost items. Unclaimed items are donated to a local charity once a month. Reduce loss by labelling clothes with the student's name.
Lunch Time Procedures
For safety reasons, we expect our pupils to stay on the school grounds from the time they arrive in the morning until they go home in the afternoon. Students may not leave the school grounds at any time unless we have a written request from the parent. We ask parents to support our closed campus policy by not writing notes for students except in exceptional circumstances. If a student is to go to another student's home at noon, both the host's parents and the guest's parents must provide notes of permission. Students play outside from 11:15-11:47 am and then eat in their classroom from 11:47 - 12:07 pm. Instruction begins at 12:12 pm.
Wheels
Please note that bicycles, scooters, skateboards, skates and skis may not be used on school property unless a special supervised event is held and advertised in the school newsletter. Bicycles and scooters must be walked on school property and stored for the day. Please use a lock to secure bikes to the bike rack upon arrival at school. Scooters must be folded and stored in the classroom. Skateboards are carried on school property and stored in the office. Heelies may not be worn indoors.
Telephones
Students may use the school telephone with the permission of their classroom teachers and a telephone pass. Parents wishing to talk to their child may phone the school and leave a message, which will be delivered to the student. The student will then have the opportunity to return the call at the next break period (lunch, recess, after school). The same procedure will be followed for parents who wish to contact teachers. Classroom instruction will be interrupted in emergency situations only.
Recycling Program
Anne McClymont Elementary School has a very successful recycling program for paper and beverage containers. Everyone is encouraged to recycle and reuse all possible materials. Every classroom and office space is provided with recycling containers. Once a week, the recycling is collected and sorted for the recycling depot. Many thanks to all who participate in this worthwhile school-wide recycling program!
Grade 7 Band Pogram
Grade 7 students have the opportunity to be involved in the Band Program. They will be learning how to play a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument in class. There are two formal forty-minute band classes per week and each student will be required to attend one sectional per week. As the band becomes more proficient, they will be brought together as a group to practice pieces for performances. A band field trip is usually scheduled in May or June.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Throughout the school year, staff members, parents, and community members volunteer their time to sponsor extra-curricular activities for students at Anne McClymont Elementary School. We appreciate the efforts of these volunteers in creating extra opportunities for students to take an active part in school life and pursue their interests. These activities vary from year to year, season to season, and grade to grade depending on the special talents and interests of volunteer sponsors. Examples of extra-curricular activities held last year included: band sectionals, basketball, chess, choir, cross-country running, floor hockey, Gr. 5 Safety Patrol, skateboarding, speech arts, sports council, the Stanley Cup Playoff contest, and volleyball. Opportunities to join these activities are announced over our public address system in our daily
announcements and/or in the school newsletter. In some cases, there may be a modest fee charged to offset the cost of extra-curricular athletics or other programs. Coaches or sponsors will provide informaton about such fees, if applicable.
