Retelling / Summarizing (Synthesizing)
When readers synthesize, they apply personal experience or background knowledge to the text and use multiple sources to create an integrated analysis.  Synthesis involves reading beyond the lines.  Readers synthesize when they combine information in new ways to order, sort, or outline information from the text.  When readers synthesize, they use a variety of thinking processes to extend a text’s literal boundaries by creating a new picture greater than the sum of the parts (Riggs & Gil-Garcia, 2001).

Asking Questions
Proficient readers spontaneously generate questions before, during, and after reading.  Learners ask questions to clarify meaning, speculate about the text, determine author’s intent, and consider rhetorical questions inspired by the text.  Good readers ask questions to assess what they already know and to set guidelines about what they need to learn (Keene & Zimmerman, 1997; Gillet & Temple as summarized by Robb, 2003).
